Blue farming in the European Green Deal: a vision for sustainable aquaculture production and consumption in the European Union

The European Commission has adopted the Communication Strategic guidelines for a more sustainable and competitive EU aquaculture for the period 2021-2030. This Communication is part of the initiatives contributing to the European Green Deal and, more particularly, the Farm to Fork strategy. This strategy recognises the important potential of sustainable aquaculture as a low carbon source of food and feed to contribute to the acceleration of the transition to an EU sustainable food system.

This event organised by the Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DG MARE) of the European Commission gathers a broad range of relevant stakeholders (governments and public authorities at EU, national and regional level, industry, NGOs, academia, investors, retailers and consumers). Its objective is to discuss how best to achieve the vision enshrined in the strategic guidelines in the years to come and get the engagement of all stakeholders to the successful implementation of that vision.

This whole day event will take place virtually, in English language, from Brussels. The event will be web streamed live for the wide audience, and interpretation available into French, German, Greek, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish languages. High-level representatives from different European institutions and the Aquaculture Advisory Council will share their views on sustainable aquaculture and its role in the European Green Deal. Speakers representing various relevant stakeholders will continue that discussion in four panels throughout the day.
