This Policy Session falls under the first Review Meeting of Mission Atlantic. Due to time constraints, this short session will include a brief project overview on the work done in the first 20 months, followed by a short 10-15 discussion thereafter. Please find the agenda attached and more information on the project below. Mission Atlantic is one of the All Atlantic flagship projects contributing (12 M euros) to the Belen Statement, the Galway statement and the Atlantic Alliance.

Mission Atlantic

MISSION ATLANTIC will map and assess the present and future status of Atlantic marine ecosystems under the influence of climate change and exploitation.
It will be the first initiative to develop operational IEAs and systematically apply IEAs through the Atlantic basin and regional case studies.

Ecosystem Assessments (IEAs) go beyond observing ecosystem status. Engaging scientists, marine stakeholders, and resource managers, the process enables the identification and evaluation of ecosystem components most at risk from natural hazards and the consequences of human activities. This knowledge provides much-needed evidence to support managers and policy makers in their decision-making, and balances the need for environmental protection with secure, sustainable development. This ensures a positive future for the Atlantic Ocean and its peoples.

Therefore, MISSION ATLANTIC will better improve (through the development of the Integrated Ecosystems Assessments) our understanding of Atlantic Ocean ecosystems and drivers of change that impact marine biodiversity and ocean resources.
